Caravanning is one of the best ways to explore the beauty of this country, often leading you to stunning spots without access to power. So, what can you run in your van when you’re off-grid?
At 3Burrows Caravan Hire, all our vans come equipped with solar panels, batteries, water tanks, and gas bottles, ensuring you have what you need for a comfortable off-grid experience.
What Won’t Work Without a Generator
Certain appliances require more power than you can generate off-grid. Here’s what you won’t be able to use:
• Air conditioning
• 240V appliances (e.g., microwave, air fryer)
• C-PAP machines
• Hair dryers and straighteners
What Will Work Off-Grid
Fortunately, many essential appliances can still operate:
• Fridge/freezer
• Lights and charging points
• Fans and ceiling vents
• TV and radio
• Water pump
• Stove and oven
• Hot water system
Since you won’t have access to 240V power or town water mains, appliances like air conditioning and 240V items that need to be plugged in—like toasters and microwaves—won’t be available once your water tanks (95-190L) run dry.
If you can’t live without these conveniences, consider booking a powered site or checking with the campsite about generator policies. We offer generators for hire; just request one when you book.
What Works Off-Grid
Gas Appliances: Your fridge, hot water system, and stove operate on gas. We provide one full gas bottle and a partially filled secondary bottle for your needs.
Water Conservation: Our vans have varying water capacities (95-190L). To make your water last, shower lightly. We recommend this method:
1. Rinse off, then turn off the water.
2. Soap up.
3. Rinse off quickly.
Battery and Solar Supply
You can power lights, the water pump, TV, radio, fans, USB ports, and 12V sockets with your battery and solar setup.
Will My Batteries Run Flat?
While it’s possible, particularly during extended cloudy days, it rarely happens. You’ll typically use more gas than battery power. To keep your solar panels effective, ensure they get plenty of sunlight—shady spots are not ideal.
A battery can drain if you use too many high-demand appliances like air conditioning or extra fridges. Hiring a generator can help you enjoy those 240V luxuries, but always check local regulations, as usage may be restricted due to environmental concerns.
